I’ve just had a lovely afternoon with crime writer Zoe Sharpe at Moor Park Library as she led an authors talk with a group of local crime writing enthusiasts.

Zoe kindly signed a copy of her book ‘Hard Knocks’ which I’m going to give to my mum!

You can meet Zoe Sharpe along with writers Meg Gardiner and Jenn Ashworth this evening at Central Library from 7pm for ‘Secrets and Suspense’. Free event.

Sunday, 6th November saw the Wordpool Family Day themed ‘If You Go Down To The Woods…’ with a performance of Little Red Riding Hood by Horse and Bamboo Theatre.

The Horseshoe, Winter Gardens, was transformed into an enchanted forest with lots of activities including storytelling, crown making, making music, sock tree’s, leaf decorating…

Reading Places: Travel Writer’s Day

Come and join travel writers Robin Bailey, Kapka Kassabova, Fran Sandham and Alistair Sutcliffe for our Reading Places day at Central Library, Saturday 5th November from 2 -4.30pm.

Each writer has a different tale to tell – from walking across Africa to climbing the highest peaks in the world.

The afternoon will be led by Anne Caldwell.

The Writers:

Robin Bayley is a writer, living in London, England. He is the author of The Mango Orchard, a book about his journey in the footsteps of his English great grandfather through Latin America.

Bayley was born in his grandmother’s house in the middle of a North Yorkshire moor in 1966. He grew up in Sheffield. After college, he moved to London where he worked in advertising and then children’s television. He twice gave up promising careers to travel and follow his muse. The fruit of these journeys can be read in The Mango Orchard, in which he tracks down his great grandfather’s secret family in a small village in western Mexico.

Kapka Kassabova grew up in communist Bulgaria, emigrated to New Zealand in her teens, and now lives in Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands. She is the author of several poetry collections. Her childhood memoir Street Without a Name was short-listed for the 2009 Prix europeen du livre and the Dolmann Travel Club Award. Her novel Villa Pacifica (Alma Books) and dance memoir Twelve Minutes of Love, a tango story (Portobello), are out in 2011. Kapka has written for The Guardian, The Sunday Times, The Times Literary Supplement, The Scottish Review of Books, and Vogue.

Alistair Sutcliffe conquered the highest mountains on each of the seven continents at his first attempt. But his hardest climb was surviving and recovering from a massive brain haemorrhage.

Tickets are £4 per person in advance from the Grundy Art Gallery or on the day at Central Library. The event will include a cream tea and books will be on sale in the afternoon.

DANCING WITH WORDS

Wander around the Central Library building to discover incidental dances amongst the books!

Students from schools and colleges in Blackpool will perform site-specific dances created in a one-off Choreography Lab based upon our connection with, and use of, WORDS.

Performances are from 11am on Saturday 12th November 2011 in various locations in the Central Library Blackpool.

AFTERNOON TEA DANCE

Join us for tea, biscuits and a good old natter about are memories of dance in Blackpool then join in the dances…learn new ones and try out the classics.

Tony Sharkey will guide you through some images of the dancing ages of Blackpool where you can tell your stories and share your memories. Then dance artist Kat Irving will lead the dance session, for all abilities, showcasing classic dances and teaching new ones.

Afternoon Tea Dance is on 10th November 2011, 2.00pm – 3.30pm in the Brunswick Room, Central Library, Blackpool.

This is a free event (tea and biscuits are £1). Tickets can be collected from Grundy Art Gallery, Queen Street, Blackpool.

Robin has printed ‘A Thousand Words’ onto the Witter page.

If anyone has been doodling on their Witter page, or printing / painting etc, please bring them in to Central Library.

NaNo – A guide to writing a novel in 30 days

Join local writer Vicky Ellis for her exciting workshop: NaNo – A guide to writing a novel in 30 days.

The workshop will introduce the concept of National Novel Writing Month and giving a brief explanation of the writer’s experiences thereof and then launch into an initial practical writing exercise which is designed to show the difficulty of writing without a plan.

After this, participants will look at some of the excellent resoures available to writers to help them construct a sound story outline, character, plot twist etc followed by participants outlining a short (500 word) story based on a template provided by the writer.

The group will then use the ‘Write or Die’ programme to type this 500 word story followed by feedback and editing.

Handouts with web and book sources will be given out along with Amazon vouchers.

Every participant will recieve a copy of Vicky Ellis’s book ‘The Colonel and the Phallus of Incomplete Mortality – You are what you fondle’ which will be launched at Wordpool.

NaNo is on Wednesday 9th November from 2-4pm at Central Library and costs £3. The workshop is limited to 10 places so early booking is advised! Tickets are available from the Grundy Art Gallery, Queen Street, Blackpool.

An Evening with Jon Gomm… and an afternoon masterclass too!

Join us for an Evening with Jon Gomm in the beautiful Spanish Ballroom at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens for the final event of the Wordpool 2011 festival.

‘Jon Gomm is an acoustic singer-songwriter with an incredible virtuoso guitar style, where he uses one acoustic guitar to create drum sounds, basslines and sparkling melodies all at the same time, and combining styles from blues and jazz to rock and pop. The emphasis is still on… the soulful vocals and songwriting however, and his original material is influenced by everything from Robert Johnson to Radiohead.

Nowadays he tours Europe, playing at festivals from Rome to Athens, has a huge cult following and is regarded by those in the know as one of the world’s most talented and innovative acoustic guitarists. Even with only one CD so far released he is already cited as an influence by many other performers. His videos are watched thousands of times within days of appearing on Youtube, and his home-recorded CD “Hypertension” has sold over ten thousand copies with no industry backing.’

Jon’s first ever single, Passionflower, has finally arrived!

Jon Gomm will be supported by The Ponies. Tickets are on sale from Tuesday 18th October from the Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool.

Wordpool Workshop
